Getting paid shouldn’t be complicated or slow. Whether you’re sending invoices, collecting one-time payments, or charging customers in person, the right setup can help you get paid faster and with less friction.
Request payment
Send a payment link, invoice, or accept payment in person with Tap to Pay.
Customer pays
Your customer chooses how to pay—card, ACH, or digital wallet. Payments are processed securely.
Get paid
Funds are deposited into your Bluevine account and become available to use.
Choose how you want to get paid
Different payment situations call for different approaches. With Bluevine, you can choose the option that fits how you run your business—and use more than one as your needs change.
| If you want to… | Best option: |
|---|---|
| Send a quick one-time payment request | Payment link |
| Manage recurring or detailed billing | Invoicing |
| Accept payments in person | Tap to Pay |
All of these options work together in one place, so you can request payments, accept them, and track your money without switching tools. You can also view payment status and payouts in a single dashboard.
A few things to keep in mind
- You don’t have to choose a single payment option upfront
- Many businesses use more than one option depending on the situation
- The way your customer pays affects what setup is required and how payouts work, which we will also cover
Your payment tools, explained
You can use one or all of these tools depending on your needs—they’re designed to work together in one place. Here’s a closer look at how they work:
Payment links
Create a link, share it with your customer, and get paid online.
- No invoice required
- Works well for quick requests
- Customers can pay immediately
Invoicing
Send structured invoices and manage billing over time.
- Add line items and details
- Set up recurring billing
- Track payment status and history
Tap to Pay
Accept contactless payments in person using your phone.
- No extra hardware required
- Customers can tap their card or device
- Ideal for on-the-go or in-person services
What you need to get started
Some payment options work right away, while others require a quick setup step.
To accept online or in-person payments, you’ll need to connect a payment processor. Bluevine uses Stripe to securely process these payments. You can connect an existing Stripe account or create a new one for free during setup.
When Stripe is required
You’ll need to connect Stripe if you want to:
- Accept card or ACH direct debit payments through payment links
- Accept card or ACH direct debit payments on paid invoices
- Use Tap to Pay for in-person payments
If you’re sending invoices without online payment, you can get started without additional setup.
What connecting Stripe enables
Once Stripe is connected:
- Customers can pay you by card
- Payments are processed securely
- Funds are paid out to your Bluevine account based on your chosen payout schedule
Bluevine is where you manage payments and track activity, while payment processing happens securely behind the scenes through Stripe.
What to expect after a customer pays
Once your customer pays, the payment moves through a few stages:
Payment completed
Your customer successfully paid
Payout sent
Funds are on their way to your account
Funds available
Money is ready to use
Payment status and payout timing aren’t the same thing. A payment can be marked as completed before the funds are available in your account. This is normal and depends on how your customer pays and how the payment is processed.
A few things to keep in mind
- Timing varies by payment method
- Payments may be grouped together before being deposited
- Seeing a delay doesn’t usually mean something went wrong
Track payments and payouts
Once you start accepting payments, you can monitor everything in one place.
In your Bluevine dashboard, you can:
- Confirm when a payment is completed from the transactions dashboard
- Check the payment status of invoices and payment links
- See when funds arrive and become available from the payouts dashboard
If you need more detailed processing information, additional details such as payment processing status and payment grouping and timing may be available in your Stripe account.
What to do next
- Start with the option that fits your most common use case
- Connect Stripe if you plan to accept card or ACH direct debit payments
- Add additional tools as your needs grow
You don’t need to do everything at once—most businesses start simple and expand over time.
