Banking services provided by The Bancorp Bank. Butter& is not a BlueVine customer.
Amanda Nguyen knows a thing or two about having to think on her feet. “As a former data analyst, a lot of times you don’t know how to solve the problems you’re solving and that is kind of the essence of being a small business owner as well,” she said. Her critical thinking skills were instrumental in helping her make the transition to starting her own customized cake bakery, Butter&, in 2017. But becoming a business owner wasn’t all icing on the cake. As her business started taking off, Amanda found herself spending more time handling business finances and administrative work—which meant more trips to her local bank. “Every time I have to go to the bank to get something done, it’s really expensive [and] oftentimes I don’t get what I really need,” she said.
Most of the time Amanda feels that her bank treats her more like a number on a spreadsheet than a valued customer. As a business owner, Amanda is limited on time, and waiting in line for her turn to speak to a customer representative has proven to be less than ideal. “I’d like to be able to pick up a phone or chat with someone to ask them directly what questions I have.” She also experiences difficulties acquiring working capital to help with cash flow, forcing her to funnel her own money into her business.
Ultimately, Amanda says that her ideal bank should act as a partner to her growing business. “I didn’t start Butter& to spend countless hours researching my options for financing and banking,” she said. “I started it to make beautiful cakes and I just want a bank that makes this stuff easy and effortless.”
